Shedding the Mask
A somatic approach to Imposter Syndrome.
Embodying the confident self
Many Women Wear a Mask
Does this sound like you?

On the outside you appear to be confident, organised and successful.
Whilst on the inside you feel deeply incompetent, or feel that you are lacking in knowledge, skills and capabilities. Perhaps you feel that most of your success has come about as some twist of fate or good fortune.

Whilst these feelings appear similar to social anxiety and general anxiety disorders, they are part of a unique psychological phenomenon commonly experienced by women called Imposter Syndrome.
Those that experience Imposter Syndrome feel like a fraud in their own life. Whilst men who suffer it tend to fear failure, women fear success and may avoid or subconsciously self sabotage their opportunities at a successful life.

The irony with Imposter Syndrome is that whilst feeling incompetent, those that suffer it are typically well educated and advanced in their career. And yet the internal suffering results in burnout, maladaptive coping behaviours and even career avoidance.
Imposter syndrome steals the joy of success!
Those that suffer Imposter Syndrome suffer in silence. Because of its association with feelings of inadequacy it is rarely spoken about, particularly as this may produce deep feelings of shame. So those that suffer rarely seek help.

However without adequate support, Imposter Syndrome can produce a freeze response in the female nervous system- rendering her stuck, frozen and avoidant of decisions that may otherwise move her forward towards her goals.

Those with Imposter Syndrome do not recover on their own. This is a deep emotional and psychological condition requiring therapeutic intervention.
It's Not About Becoming More Confident
Many women make the mistake in thinking they just need to grow more in confidence. Confidence is not the problem. On the outside you may already come across as confident and capable.

Imposter Syndrome is a feeling and not a rationale thought. Most people can rationalise that they are trained and knowledgable in their field, and yet they don't FEEL confident. They don't FEEL they deserve success, they FEEL they don't belong, or that they don't have the skills.
It is the somatic body that experiences emotions. This is why recovery from imposter syndrome requires a different approach to traditional talk therapy that relies on cognitive thought.
Finding her takes a different approach to recovery in providing somatic therapy.
Somatic therapy is a form of body-based therapy that works with feelings and emotions. Somatic therapy not only works to regulate the nervous system but can also identify the wounded parts requiring compassion. It is often the wounded part in an individual that learnt from past experiences that they aren't good enough.

And this is trauma work!
Trauma support often requires acknowledging the imprint of the past and working through painful experiences embedded within the nervous system. It is these past experiences that determine how our future selfs manage stress and success.

Recovering from imposter syndrome is not about building more confidence. It's about allowing the wounds of the past to heal, then repairing the nervous system to feel empowered from within to achieve and celebrate the wins.
In doing so, you create the opportunity to truly feel confident, successful and aligned, and to experience the joy that comes with success.

FAQ
I have no experience with somatic practice, does this matter?- Absolutely not. You are most welcome. You will be guided into the practice and all techniques will be demonstrated. I invite you to come with an open mind and curiosity to explore your inner world.

What is included in the practice?- This session will use body movement, body positioning, breath, visualisation, yoga. We may also include some journalling and reflection

I'm nervous about what might arise for me emotionally- Emotions often do arise with somatic practice. This creates an opportunity for us to move with them, or to better understand them. These sessions are trauma-informed, meaning your instructor is not only aware of how trauma may present in your body, but will do her best to support you in moving with these emotions in a way that supports recovery and avoids triggering. However you are encouraged to advocate for yourself by speaking with your therapist when it feels too much or overwhelming. Pushing through is never the goal and can only cause set back.

I have an injury are these practices safe?- The practices we use will include full body shaking and some body resistance work. Depending on your injury, most practices can be modified and variations will be offered. Reach out personally if you are unsure.

Will this session 'cure me'- The techniques I am offering in this session will hopefully become tools for you to access and utilise in times of feeling stuck and inadequate. Somatic practice is not necessarily about 'curing' but equipping ourselves with resources to support us at certain times. Healing is a journey and certainly never occurs in three sessions. However you will feel equiped to continue on this journey with resource to support you outside of our sessions.
